Some battery powered tools are coming without battery and charger.This is mostly related to professional and semi-professional tools. Batteries for these tools are usually more expensive because of complicated structure and quality. Batteries are very important because tool's performance and durability depends on them. Tools sold without battery are called "naked", "body only" or something like that. Some tools may be compatible with different batteries. The main characteristics of the batteries are Voltage, Chemistry and Capacity.
BATTERY VOLTAGE usually ranges from 4V up to 48V. Standard voltages for power tools batteries are 4V, 9V, 12V, 14.4V, 18V, 24V, 36V, 48V. If you are looking for a battery for your tool - this is the first characteristic to match. If your tool is 18V you must buy 18V battery.
BATTERY CHEMISTRY (Type) means the chemical mechanism to keep the charge in the battery. Lead-acid, Nickel-Metal-Hydride (Ni-Cd), and Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion).NiCd is reliable and cheap but they have so called "memory effect" when you have to discharge it completely before charging. The power of NiCd batteries degrades with the time which means that the power is less when it is half discharged. Li-Ion are more expensive but the performance is much better. They don't have memory effect and the power is constant during discharge. Some tools may work with compatible NiCd and Li-Ion batteries of the same voltage Dual-Chemistry charges allow you to charge any type of battery without damaging them.
BATTERY CAPACITY is measured in Amper-Hours. This is basically the amount of energy, stored in the battery. From 1Ah up to 4 Ah is the most common capacities. The question "how long it will work" is generally incorrect because all depends on load and usage. To drill one hole of 2 mm in wood or 10 mm in concrete may take the same amount of time but the last one need more energy.
